Hep C: Get the Facts
Referred to by many as "The" Silent Stalker, over 5.3 million people are estimated to have been infected with HCV. This virus lives in the blood and destroys healthy liver cells. It is the leading cause of cirrhosis and liver transplantation today.
Though cases of recent infections are being televised today, we now realize that a majority of the population came in contact with this virus between 1979 and 2000, through blood transfusions, dialysis and contaminated medical equipment. Many are unaware of their infection, and are at risk of infecting others accidentally through the sharing of items like razors, ear and body rings, or being serviced by tattoo or nail salons using unsanitary equipment. For these reasons, HEP C-MO recommends testing for anyone between 25 and 55 years of age.
And, if you work in a profession where the chance of blood contact is high, you should get tested at least three times a year.(e.g. CNA, Medical Assistant, Psych tech, Policeman, Firefighter, EMT)
Though treatment is available and in many cases, effective to date, there is no cure. Hep C - like any other chronic illness, if caught early, can be managed, but it requires a proactive patient, willing and ready to educate themselves and others on the facts.

Caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). It ranges in severity from a mild illness, lasting a few weeks (acute), to a serious long-term (chronic) illness that can lead to liver disease or liver cancer. Of major concern to newly immigrated Asians, it's a growing concern in the United States as the virus is preventable and immunization is available. Transmission/Vaccination
